For the first year of life yes having a dummy I think can help parents with comforting their little one. But after Id say 2 having it all day everyday for me is a no no... my little one has hers now at 11 months when she isnt well or teething and at nap/sleep time most of the time she isnt interested.
I do think that dummies are much better than letting children suck their thumbs as my cousin did it and had something called rabbit teeth where the front two teeth were straight and the rest were going back from the sucking on the the thumb but he was like 4 and did it all the time
